Quem sou?

Nasci e cresci no Porto, cidade que amo profundamente, no seio de uma família grande, sem ligações à agricultura. O Aniki Bóbó do Oliveira fez-me sonhar com a miúda bonita e o Sousa Veloso mostrou-me a Vida Rural. Ficava durante longos períodos pendurado na montra da Sementeira do Alípio Dias, fascinado com as últimas novidades em bolbos e afins.

Viajava regularmente para a aldeia da minha avó materna, nas férias escolares. Apesar de ser costureira mantinha, como todos na aldeia, uma horta onde havia um pouco de tudo. Foi lá, sob o seu olhar atento, que construi a minha primeira horta, ainda miúdo.

Aos 14 anos não sabia o que queria fazer a seguir... Estranhamente cultivava vasos de hortícolas em casa, cuidava de pássaros caídos do ninho, trazia cães para casa, enfim, um caso de preocupação parental! Fui mandado analisar no psicólogo do banco onde o meu pai trabalhava. O senhor era um tipo simpático, de lentes grossas e acabou por revelar-se decisivo na escolha do caminho que hoje sigo. Disse: “Um tipo como tu deve ir para uma escola especial, uma escola agrícola. Há uma em Santo Tirso”.

Fui, vi e apaixonei-me. Foi tão bom, aprendi tanto, fiz os melhores amigos e cresci como não podia ter crescido em casa. Daí parti para Vila Real onde ingressei na Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.

Nela fui aluno de vários cursos, já que estudei de perto o mundo rural, participei em inúmeras tertúlias, fiz diversas viagens e senti nos ossos as quatro estações do ano. Em suma, todas estas aprendizagens de vida contribuíram para que me embrenhasse definitivamente na agricultura.

As plantas aromáticas perseguiram-me sempre, quis estudá-las melhor e acabei por vir parar ao lado de casa, aos Jardins de Serralves. Fui pago durante 6 vibrantes anos para gerir 18 hectares de uma das mais fantásticas coleções botânicas do país. Aí tornei-me numa espécie de Jean-Baptist de la Quintine - O Jardineiro do Rei. Construí um jardim com uma enorme coleção de plantas aromáticas e plantei centenas de árvores.

De jardineiro do rei quis a vida que me fizesse agricultor. Assim naveguei rio abaixo para me vir a instalar nos aposentos de Pedro e Inês de Castro, na Quinta do Paço em Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia. Durante 21 anos fiz das ervas pão na mesa e acredito convictamente que existem ainda tantas conquistas por fazer... 

Das aromáticas se fizeram milhares de cantinhos espalhados pelo país fora, e centenas de novos rurais perseguiram o perfume cujo rastilho foi por mim ateado. E a vida continua, de pés assentes na terra e a consciência de que o futuro será verde ou morrer a tentar.

E hoje?

Acompanho projetos de agricultura regenerativa, restauro ecológico e valorização da biodiversidade, colaborando com empresas, municípios e outras organizações que procuram responder aos desafios da sustentabilidade e da adaptação às alterações climáticas. Entre o terreno e a estratégia, procuro ajudar a construir soluções que aproximem a atividade humana dos processos naturais.

Paralelamente, mantenho uma intensa atividade de divulgação e formação. Tenho o privilégio de trabalhar com empresas, universidades, escolas e outras instituições, partilhando conhecimento sobre agricultura, ecologia, plantas e território. Acredito que a mudança começa muitas vezes pela compreensão dos problemas e pela capacidade de imaginar alternativas.

Nos últimos anos tenho também colaborado com o Museu do Porto na realização de visitas temáticas pela cidade, dando a conhecer a história das árvores, dos jardins e das paisagens urbanas que moldaram a identidade portuense. São momentos que me permitem unir duas paixões antigas: a natureza e a história.

Continuo a aprender todos os dias. Continuo a fazer perguntas. Continuo a acreditar que o conhecimento só ganha verdadeiro valor quando é partilhado.

Chegado a este ponto do percurso, senti que era tempo de colocar a experiência acumulada ao serviço de outras organizações. Foi assim que nasceu a Negrilho Consulting.

Ajudamos empresas, municípios e instituições a compreender melhor a sua relação com a natureza e a transformar desafios ambientais em oportunidades de criação de valor. Trabalhamos em áreas como a agroecologia, a agricultura regenerativa, a biodiversidade, o restauro ecológico, as estratégias ESG e a valorização dos serviços dos ecossistemas.

A nossa visão é simples: promover uma nova relação entre empresas e natureza.

Acredito que os grandes desafios do século XXI não se resolvem apenas com tecnologia ou regulamentação. Resolvem-se também com conhecimento, compromisso e capacidade para regenerar aquilo que durante demasiado tempo julgámos inesgotável.

Who Am I?

I was born and raised in Porto, a city I love deeply, in a large family with no connection whatsoever to agriculture. Manoel de Oliveira's Aniki-Bóbó made me dream of the beautiful girl, while Sousa Veloso introduced me to Vida Rural and the fascinating world of farming. I would spend long periods staring into the window of Alípio Dias' seed shop, captivated by the latest bulbs, seeds and gardening curiosities.

During school holidays, I regularly travelled to my maternal grandmother's village. Although she worked as a seamstress, like almost everyone in the village she kept a small vegetable garden filled with a little bit of everything. It was there, under her watchful eye, that I built my very first garden as a child.

At the age of fourteen, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Strangely enough, I was growing vegetables in pots at home, caring for birds that had fallen from their nests and bringing stray dogs home. In short, I was a source of constant concern for my parents. 

They eventually sent me to see the psychologist employed by the bank where my father worked. He was a kind man with thick glasses and, as it turned out, he would play a decisive role in shaping my future. He looked at me and said:

"Someone like you should attend a special school. An agricultural school. There's one in Santo Tirso."

I went. I saw. I fell in love.

Those years were extraordinary. I learned more than I could have imagined, made lifelong friends and grew in ways that would never have been possible at home. From there, I moved to Vila Real to study at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.

University life offered far more than formal education. I immersed myself in rural life, participated in countless discussions, travelled extensively and experienced the changing seasons in all their intensity. Together, these experiences cemented my commitment to agriculture.

Aromatic and medicinal plants had always followed me throughout life. Wanting to understand them better, I eventually found myself back near home, at the renowned Serralves Gardens in Porto. For six vibrant years, I had the privilege of managing eighteen hectares of one of Portugal's finest botanical collections. There, I became something of a modern-day Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinie, the King's Gardener. I created a large aromatic plant garden and planted hundreds of trees.

Life, however, had other plans. From the King's Gardener, I became a farmer.

Following the course of the Douro River, I settled at Quinta do Paço, in Canidelo, Vila Nova de Gaia, a place forever associated with the story of Pedro and Inês de Castro. For twenty-one years I made a living from herbs and plants, building what would become one of Portugal's most recognised organic farming projects. Yet I remain convinced that there are still many achievements waiting ahead.

From those aromatic plants emerged thousands of "little corners" across the country, and hundreds of new farmers and growers followed the trail of a passion whose spark I had the privilege of helping ignite. Life goes on, with my feet firmly on the ground and the conviction that the future must be green, or at least that we should devote our lives to trying.

And Today?

Today I work on projects focused on regenerative agriculture, ecological restoration and biodiversity enhancement, collaborating with companies, municipalities and other organisations seeking to address the challenges of sustainability and climate adaptation. Moving between fieldwork and strategy, I strive to develop solutions that reconnect human activity with natural processes.

Alongside this work, I maintain an active role in education and public engagement. I have the privilege of working with businesses, universities, schools and a wide range of institutions, sharing knowledge about agriculture, ecology, plants and landscapes. I believe that meaningful change often begins with understanding problems and imagining alternatives.

In recent years, I have also collaborated with the Porto Museum, leading thematic walks throughout the city and exploring the connections between trees, gardens, landscapes, cultural heritage and collective memory. These experiences allow me to bring together two lifelong passions: nature and history.

I continue to learn every day. I continue to ask questions. And I continue to believe that knowledge only acquires its true value when it is shared.

Negrilho Consulting

At this stage of my journey, I felt it was time to place the experience accumulated over decades at the service of other organisations. That is how Negrilho Consulting was born.

We help companies, municipalities and institutions better understand their relationship with nature and transform environmental challenges into opportunities for long-term value creation. Our work focuses on agroecology, regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, ecological restoration, ESG strategies and the enhancement of ecosystem services.

Our vision is simple: to foster a new relationship between business and nature.

I believe that the great challenges of the twenty-first century will not be solved through technology or regulation alone. They also require knowledge, commitment and the ability to regenerate what we have long taken for granted as inexhaustible.
